Helmshore; June arrives, damply!

After our Welsh Adventure, this week I am back to local deer stalking and Cuckoo hunting; my choice of weapon being a long lens, rather than a gun!

Monday was all about Goldfinches. I captured a family feeding on thistles. Unusually, they were not too bothered by my proximity and allowed me to take some nice shots.

Tuesday dawned.. wet! The outraged look on Pepper’s face as I forced her into her rain coat spelled the theme of the day! I opted for the riverside walk in the morning, rather than head up to Musbury, my error does become apparent.

Everyone I saw was bundled up in waterproofs and all remarked on the delightful June weather.

As I headed down Holcombe Road, the beautiful sight of a barn owl hunting caught my eye; in Musbury valley! I was furious as I’ve been watching the barn for a glimpse for weeks; during the breeding season, they are often out during the day.

However, not all of Tuesday was a write off; our veg box delivery was waiting on the doorstep when I got home. As the weather was so miserable, I made a lovely asparagus soup for dinner; recipe below. It’s supposed to serve 4, but we were eating it for several days!

On Wednesday morning , I headed out to see if I could see the barn owl, but I was unsuccessful. However, an alternative treat presented. Pepper alerted me to an observer from the long grass; the Roe Deer Mama was out and her two kids were active!

At the last minute, I decided to take an evening walk, and this paid off as the barn owl emerged for an evening hunt.

Its been a great week for the wildlife, despite the unsavoury weather. I’ll be out on the weekend to see what other treats the local area offer!

I’m Sal, a writer drawn to the quiet magic of the natural world. My blog gathers the moments that shape a week: the first light over the hills, the call of winter birds, a walk that becomes a memory. I write about landscapes, seasons, travel, and the gentle threads that connect us to place.

Most of these moments are shared with Pepper, my ever-enthusiastic companion, who reminds me daily that even the simplest walk can hold a little wonder. Together, we explore the magic tucked inside an ordinary life — the kind you only notice when you slow down, look closely, and let the world reveal itself one small moment at a time.
